What It Is
Every page on a business website is there to lead a visitor somewhere. The call to action is the button or link that asks for that next step. On a dentist's site it might read "Book an Appointment." On a plumber's site it might read "Call Now," and on a roofer's site "Request a Quote." The trade shortens the term to CTA. The step it asks for is the one that turns a visitor into a customer, which is why it sits at the center of conversion rate optimization.
How It Works
A good call to action does three things. It says what happens when it is tapped. "Request a Quote" tells a visitor exactly what comes next, and "Submit" or "Learn More" does not. It can be seen on the first screen of a phone, before any scrolling, because a visitor who has to hunt for it may not bother. And when the step is a phone call, it shows the number or the word Call rather than a bare phone icon, which is easy to miss and gives a visitor nothing to read.
A page works best with one main call to action, repeated. The same button at the top of the page, again partway down, and again at the bottom gives a visitor the same clear choice wherever they stop reading. Several different buttons of equal weight do the opposite. A page that asks a visitor to call, book online, join a newsletter, and follow on social media all at once leaves them to work out which one matters. A second, quieter option is fine, such as a phone number beside a booking button, as long as it is plain which one is the main one.
Why It Matters for Being Found
The call to action is where a visit either becomes a customer or does not. A visitor who has decided to hire a plumber and cannot find how to reach one will go back to the results and pick the next business. Nothing else on the page makes up for that. It is also the step that conversion tracking counts, so a clear call to action is what makes it possible to know how many calls and bookings the website produces. Checking it costs nothing. Open your own site on a phone and see whether the next step is in front of you without scrolling, and whether the button says what it does.
