Analytics and Conversion Tracking

Analytics and conversion tracking is counting the calls, forms, and bookings your website produces, and knowing where each one came from.

What It Is

Analytics records what visitors do on your website: how they arrived, which pages they read, where they left. Conversion tracking is the part that matters most, which is marking the actions that make you money. For a local business those are usually a phone call, a form sent, a booking made, or a purchase. Google Analytics, the free standard, calls these actions key events. Google Ads calls the ones it bids on conversions.

How It Works

A small piece of code on every page reports visits to Google Analytics. On its own, that counts visitors. To count customers, each important action has to be set up as a key event: the thank you page after a form, the confirmation after a booking, the tap on your phone number. Then every visit is tagged with where it came from, like Google search, your Business Profile, an ad, an email, or another website, so each call or booking can be traced back to its source. Links you share yourself, in an email or a social post, can carry tags called UTM parameters that make the source explicit.

The common failure is quiet. The code is installed, the traffic reports look busy, and not one key event is set up, so nobody can say which visits turned into work.

Why It Matters for Being Found

Every other kind of marketing is a bet about where customers come from. Tracking is how you find out whether the bet paid. Without it, an owner has to guess which of the ads, the listing, and the website is bringing in the jobs, and the money usually goes to whatever is loudest rather than whatever works. With it, you can see which searches turn into calls, drop what does not work, and put more behind what does.
