What It Is
Search "skylight repair near me" or "dentist in Littleton" and, before any website appears, Google shows a map with three businesses beside it. Each one carries its name, its rating and review count, its hours, and a button to call or get directions. The trade calls that block the local pack, the map pack, or the 3 pack; Google calls them local results. A link under the three opens the full list in Google Maps.
How It Works
A place in the pack cannot be bought. Ads can appear above it, marked Sponsored, but the three listings are chosen by Google from Google Business Profiles, not from website rankings. Google names what decides it: how well a profile matches the search, how far the business is from the searcher, and how well known it is, which includes its reviews. Those three are the heart of local SEO.
The pack is different for every searcher, because distance is measured from where that person is standing or from the place they named. A business can be first in the pack across town and absent ten miles away. Sometimes Google shows one business alone instead of three, when it judges that the search is about that business or that only one fits.
Why It Matters for Being Found
The pack sits above every website result, and on a phone it fills the first screen. Someone who needs a service today often calls straight from it and never visits a website. Three businesses get that call; everyone else is a scroll away. For a business with several locations, each location earns its own place in its own city's pack, which is why a strong home office does not carry a new market on its own.
