What It Is
Two roofers quote the same job at the same price, and the homeowner picks the one whose truck they have seen around the neighborhood for ten years. That gap is brand equity: the trust a name has banked, doing its work before anyone has talked. The marketing literature defines it as the difference your name makes to how a customer responds, against the same offer from a name they do not know.
How It Works
It is built from every encounter with the name, and from what each one leaves behind: a job done well and the review that follows, a referral, a truck on the street, a yard sign, and the search results, map listing, and reviews a customer checks on the way to calling. Two things have to hold at once. The customer has to know the name, and what they know has to be good. A name nobody recognizes has no equity to spend, and a name everyone recognizes for the wrong reasons has less than none.
It is spent the same way, one encounter at a time. A stale listing with last year's phone number, an old site with a dead form, or a review left unanswered for a year each cost a little of what the good encounters earned. Keeping the name consistent everywhere it appears, in one spelling with one phone number and one address, is most of the work of protecting it.
Why It Matters for Being Found
A name people already trust turns a search into a call with no ad in between, and it lifts every other channel: reviews land on it, referrals point at it, and the AI engines repeat what the reviews say. It is the part of your growth you have already paid for, and it costs little to protect.
